Here Comes the Sun by Nicole Dennis-Benn
Nicole Dennis-Benn has created a world full of rich detail and woeful despair in which hope and heartbreak are constantly intertwined for almost every character the reader meets. Dancing deftly between prose and her characters’ patois, Dennis-Benn’s depiction of a small Jamaican town and its inhabitants is strikingly vivid. As you progress through the novel, heroes become less heroic, the mild villainy of other characters is revealed to be much less mild than originally thought, and the true evils of capitalism and colonialism destroy everything in sight. After spending the entire novel hoping for the sun promised by the title, you’ll find that it not only comes with a price, but that it is already setting.
